The New A2L Refrigerant Is Almost Here: What You Need To Know
If you’ve been thinking about replacing your air conditioner, now is the time. The new A2L refrigerant is almost here: what you need to know. The EPA has mandated that, starting January 1, 2025, all new air conditioners must use a more environmentally friendly refrigerant. These new systems will be 20%-30% more expensive due to increased costs for training, testing, and equipment. Here’s what you need to know about R410A and the upcoming changes.
The transition to these new refrigerants is crucial for reducing environmental impact, but it also means that the costs of installation and maintenance will rise. Being informed and prepared can help you make the best decision for your home and budget.
What Should You Do?
If your air conditioner or heat pump is older or nearing the end of its life, consider replacing it with an R410A system before the end of 2024. Consult with a Western Heating, Air & Plumbing Comfort Advisor to determine the best course of action for your situation.
Why You Should Care
Your current cooling system uses either the old R22 refrigerant or R410A, which replaced R22 several years ago. R410A has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 2088, meaning it has a high potential to adversely affect the environment. Starting January 1, 2025, manufacturers must use one of two new A2L refrigerants, R454B or R32, which have a GWP of 750 or less.
Key Points
- Existing Systems: You don’t need to change your current R410A or R22 system. R410A will still be available for existing units.
- Cost Impact: New systems will be 20%-30% more expensive due to redesign and new equipment requirements.
- Environmental Impact: The 2025 changes aim to be more environmentally friendly.
- Availability: R410A equipment can still be installed until January 1, 2026.
