The Top 3 Things You Need to Know About Heat Pumps

What you should know about heat pumps

Summer is just around the corner, and you may be asking yourself if your home’s air conditioning is up to par. You may have heard of heat pumps, but it sounds like something that you wouldn’t want to use during the summer heat. Contrary to its name, a heat pump is not only associated with heating but cooling down your house as well. Here are the top three things you need to know about heat pumps and why they might be right for you.

1) What Is a Heat Pump

A heat pump is a refrigeration system that uses a mechanical compression cycle that can either heat or cool an area of the house. Usually, there is a unit in your house called the “air handler” and an outside unit which is the actual “heat pump.” The heat pump resembles a typical A/C unit in both size and stature. A compressor in the heat pump circulates refrigerant between itself and the air handler which absorbs and releases heat as it makes its cycle.

2) How It Works

A heat pump system constantly moves air from one place to another wherever it is needed or vice versa depending on the ambient temperature. During the winter and colder times, the heat pump will pump warm air into the house from outside. This seems odd, but there is actually heat energy present despite the cold temperature. During the summer and hotter temperatures, the heat pump will reverse its direction and take the warm air from inside your house allowing fresher cooler air to be circulated inside.

3) Efficiency

Being that a heat pump moves and transfers heat rather than generates its own heat, the heat pump system is much more efficient than a typical heater or furnace. Heat pumps are electric, which means you can save a considerable amount on your gas bill.
