Summer Fun At Home

School is out and kids everywhere are celebrating! If you have kids like I do, you know that every summer is different. Once this summer passes, the next one will be you’re your children a whole year older.

The good news is, you don’t have to spend a fortune to make great memories. Here are some tips for at-home summer fun.

Game time
Not every day is sunny in the summer (plus some days are just too hot to go out). Playing card and board games are a great way to bond while developing useful life skills like fairness, analytical thinking, and patience.

Movie night
Even if you feel guilty about letting your kids watch too much TV, time spent watching a movie together is different. You can laugh together, discuss important lessons, and enjoy the physical closeness of sitting together in front the screen.

Outdoor crafts
You can do crafts any time of the year, but some crafts are best done outside. Let the kids go wild with paint, chalk, glitter, and whatever else you can think of. Cleanup is only a hose-down away.

Sprinkler fun
Speaking of hoses, you don’t have to wait for an epic mess to have fun in the water. As long as there’s no drought, an occasional run (and slide and jump) through the sprinkler turns an unbearably hot day into memorable fun.

Campout
Camping in the backyard can be almost as much fun as camping in the forest (without the scary wildlife). If you can’t make it into the woods this summer, bring this outdoor adventure to your home.

Playing dirty
Gardening can be a terrible chore or an amazing activity. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, your kids (especially little ones) will love an excuse to play in the dirt. And who knows? Your efforts might yield beautiful flowers or a side dish for summer barbecues.

Costume fun
You don’t have to wait for Halloween to dress the kids in costumes. Have them make their own and let their imaginations run wild. You could even have them put on a show for visiting extended family.

Puppet shows
Harness your children’s imagination by having them put on a puppet show. Like the costumes, they can make their own and turn it into a family production for you or visitors.

Build models
You can let kids do this on their own or with your help. Turn it into a bonding opportunity that will develop fine motor skills and produce something to make everyone proud.

Regardless of what you choose to do with your kids this summer, the most important thing is to enjoy it. The years go quickly, even if the days seem long. Make them memorable.
