Signs Your Heat Pump Needs a Repair
If you’re not an HVAC expert, you might not notice some of the signs that your heat pump is broken. The obvious sign that you need repairs is insufficient heating and cooling coming from your unit, but some of the less commonly known problems include:
Leaking Refrigerant
Your heat pump relies on refrigerant to regulate heating and cooling in your home, ensuring year-round comfort. If refrigerant levels drop due to a leak, your system will struggle to maintain the correct temperature. This leak also reduces efficiency, increases energy bills, and potentially damages the system. Since handling refrigerant requires specialized knowledge and tools, it’s essential to call a professional HVAC contractor for prompt repairs. Addressing leaks early can help prevent costly breakdowns and keep your heat pump running at peak performance.
Constant Operation
If your heat pump runs constantly, it may work harder than necessary due to a dirty air filter or a more serious issue, like a faulty electronic control board assembly. However, it’s important to note that heat pumps naturally run more often than traditional AC units or furnaces. Unlike a furnace that blasts heat in short bursts, a heat pump maintains a steady, energy-efficient temperature by running for extended periods at lower power. This helps keep your home comfortable without large temperature swings. If your heat pump seems to be overworking, a professional inspection can determine whether it’s operating normally or if maintenance is needed.
Stuck in Cooling Mode
One of the benefits of a heat pump is its ability to provide both heating and cooling. However, if it only provides cooling, this can significantly disturb your home’s comfort. An issue with the reversing valve, which switches from heating to cooling in your heat pump system, could cause this.
Odd noises, strange smells, and icing are common signs of heat pump failure. If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it’s better to repair them before they become costly replacements.
Call us immediately for a quick diagnosis and repair if you notice any of these issues

We ended up with just having the coils cleaned. The cost was $520.00 which seemed a bit steep. However Ethan the technician was great. Showed and explained what he had to do to clean the coils. Was very efficient. Work space was clean after he finished. He did a great job. Very pleasant and respectful. Ethan deserves a 5 star rating. 3 stars because of the miss communication between scheduler and supervisor.

When I returned home after about a week, I found an absolute mess: the furnace room door was off its hinges, there was a furnace filter propped next to the furnace, and general disarray in the space. I went to work trying to clean things up and discovered that the problems were even worse than I expected. Not only was the door of its hinges, it had actually been broken. The technician didn’t even mention it, let alone offer to fix it. The furnace filter that was propped by the furnace was mangled and torn and plastic packaging (like from a new filter) was stuffed inside it. We figured out that the one leaning there was the new filter I had installed about 6 weeks before (and did not need to be changed) and the plastic was from the spare I keep on hand. It’s a tight squeeze to get the filter in and out and requires care not to damage it. Clearly the technician wasn’t careful and simply ripped it out of its housing. Again, no mention of this from the technician and no offer to replace what he ruined.
Upon further inspection, I found that one of the seals around the PVC pipe that delivers air to the unit was not in place. I went back and looked at the pictures from the previous service (in March) and it was properly seated, which makes me question whether the technician knew what he was doing or cared at all to do the job right. I’ve canceled my service contract with Western Heating and will never utilize their services again. I’d caution you against using them as well.

Heat Pump FAQs
Should I invest in a heat pump for my Utah home?
Heat pumps are energy-efficient, cost-effective, and reliable for Utah’s climate. Western can help you choose the best heating and cooling system for your home and budget.
Are heat pumps eco-friendly?
Yes—heat pumps use less energy and produce fewer emissions than many other heating and cooling options. They’re a great choice if you want to lower your carbon footprint or “go green.”
Can I put a cover over my outdoor heat pump?
No, you should not cover your heat pump. Unlike traditional AC units, heat pumps run year-round and provide heating and cooling. Covering it can restrict airflow, trap moisture, and damage internal components, especially in wet or freezing conditions. Heat pumps are designed to withstand various weather conditions, so a cover isn’t necessary and could even lead to system failure. If you’re concerned about snow or debris, a manufacturer-approved shelter or wind barrier may be a better option.
Can I use a heat pump as an air conditioner?
Yes! A heat pump can function as an air conditioner by cooling your home in the summer, just like a traditional AC unit. In cooling mode, it absorbs heat inside your home and transfers it outside, keeping your space comfortable.
However, in harsh winter climates like ours, a heat pump alone isn’t enough to heat your home when temperatures drop below freezing. That’s why it’s best to pair a heat pump with a traditional furnace for a dual-fuel system. This setup allows the heat pump to provide energy-efficient heating in mild temperatures while the furnace takes over when it gets too cold. This combination ensures year-round comfort and maximizes efficiency in extreme weather conditions.
Is a heat pump more efficient than a gas furnace?
Depending on outdoor temperatures, a high-efficiency heat pump (SEER 19+) can produce more heat per dollar than a gas furnace. Heat pumps work best in mild weather, but your system may switch to a gas furnace for better efficiency when it gets very cold.
