5 Ways to Warm Up Your Home This Winter

Keep your home warm this winter

Winters in Utah are long and cold, but that doesn’t mean your home can’t be a haven of warmth and comfort for you and your family. Taking some steps to warm up your home, both literally and aesthetically, can do wonders for your health and wellbeing. So, without further ado, here are Western Heating and Air’s five essential ways to warm up your home this winter!

Get a thermostat that allows setback

How about ensuring that your heating is on when you’re home, but saving energy when you’re gone? Setback allows you to vary the temperature setting according to your daily schedule. So for the days at work (when you’re using the boss’s heat), you can leave your home a little cooler. In the evening, you can enter a warm house without having to wait for it to heat up while sitting in your parka.

You have two main options for this: a programmable thermostat that lets you input the temperature settings you’d like throughout the week and a smart thermostat that learns your schedule and connects to your phone so you can remotely increase the temperature before entering the door. Discuss with a professional so you can choose the right one for you.

Warm-up your window treatments

Thin curtains can let a lot of cold air in at night, especially if you have older windows in your home. Consider swapping your sheer linen curtains for a heavier material that contains a thermal lining. This can insulate your home as well as help the room look warm and cozy.

Add warmth underfoot

Do you ever have trouble getting out of bed in the morning because your bathroom floor is so cold in the winter? Adding a rug to hard floor surfaces can make a world of difference for your home comfort. In the winter you’ll want a rug with a little pile and place these in strategic areas around the house where the cold floor is most likely to annoy. Avoid sisal and flat-weave rugs during the cold seasons, save those for the summer when heat retention isn’t as necessary.

Use warmer lighting

Ever heard of ambiance? Lighting is a huge factor in creating the ambiance you want in a room. White lighting is often used in workplaces and schools to foster productivity, but yellow light is calming, relaxing, and can encourage a cozy environment. Warm lighting can make all the difference in the warmth of your home, even though it doesn’t change the actual temperature.

Create comforting smells

Smell influences a lot about our lives. Good and comforting smells can change the way a home feels. Flowers can make a home smell fresh, and cooking can make a home smell pleasant and comfortable. Find candles or flowers that create familiar and comforting scents, or spend time cooking or baking your favorite dishes.
